Add the Leadfeeder tracking script to your site as a new tag in Google Tag Manager. Once Google Tag Manager (GTM) is on your site, you can add scripts like ours without coding or access to your site's codebase.
Before you start: Google Tag Manager needs to be on your site, and you need publishing rights in GTM.
To add GTM itself, you need to be able to install scripts on your website. You can't use the global site tag (gtag.js) to install the tracking script.
Use Google Tag Assistant in Chrome to check that GTM is on your site and which container it uses. Add the tracking script to that container.
How to add the tracking script with Google Tag Manager
Copy the tracking script. If you've just signed up, copy the script from the Install the Leadfeeder script page using Copy Code. Otherwise, click the Settings gear icon at the bottom left, then go to Company > Website Tracker > Tracker script and click Copy script.
Sign in to Google Tag Manager, open the correct container, and click New Tag on the Overview page.
Name the tag "Website Tracker", then click Tag Configuration.
Choose a tag type, using one of these two options.
Option 1: Custom HTML. Scroll down, select Custom HTML, and paste in your tracking script.
Option 2: Community template. Use our Google Tag Manager community template instead. Click Discover more tag types in the Community Template Gallery.
Search for "Web Visitors", add the template to your workspace, and select it.
Paste in your script ID from Company > Website Tracker > Tracker script.
Click the Triggering box under Tag Configuration and select All Pages.
Your screen should now look like this:
Click Save to close the tag. On the GTM Overview page, click Submit at the top right, then Publish. Adding a description of your changes is optional.
If you don't have publishing rights in GTM, ask your GTM admin to publish the changes.
Open Versions to check your changes are live. A green version with today's date means GTM is set up.
GTM can take a while to start tracking, and clicking around your site can help. To check the script works, see How to check the tracking script is working.
If you set up an exclusion trigger in GTM, check that it isn't inverted and doesn't block the tracking script.
For advanced tracking, see Customize your site tracking with JavaScript API or contact our support team.
Check your hostname rules
Check the hostname rules in your settings to make sure you're tracking the right sites. Leadfeeder sets them when you sign up. Only change them if your site changes.
Not using Google Tag Manager yet?
These steps only apply if you use GTM. To learn more, see Google's Tag Manager page.
