Frequently Asked Questions About the Web Visitors Tracking Script

These are the most common questions asked about the Web Visitors tracking script.

Written by Ruthie Keith

What are some of the most asked questions about the Web Visitors tracking script?

We answer a lot of questions every day, but these are what we hear the most often!

Q: What is the Web Visitors tracking script?

In simple terms, the Web Visitors tracking script is a small piece of JavaScript that you place on your website so Web Visitors can identify visits.

This type of script can also be referred to as a tag, tracking pixel, or script. We call it a tracking script, Google Tag Manager calls it a tag and Facebook calls it a pixel. All of these mean a piece of code that's inserted on the website.

The tracking script matches each visit's IP address against company databases to find out which company the visit came from. It then adds business details such as company name and industry.

Q: Will the tracking script slow down my site?

The tracking script shouldn't have any impact on your site speed. It is an asynchronous script, meaning it doesn't have to load before your site loads. It works in the background making page loading your priority.

The tracking script is delivered from the AWS CloudFront content delivery network, which ensures that no matter where the visits come from the script is always loaded close to them with minimal latency. CloudFront has over 200 edge locations all over the world, including, most likely, one near your visitor.

Q: With many web browsers blocking cookies and tracking to protect privacy, how will that affect the tracking script?

The majority of these changes are in regards to 3rd party cookies. Browsers blocking 3rd party cookies has no effect on how Web Visitors operates since we don't use them.

Though Leadfeeder uses 1st party cookies, we rely mainly on a completely different type of technology which means to us 'no cookies, no problem'.

Even if all cookies were blocked we would still be able to ID companies visiting your site.

Q: Does the tracking script collect personal data?

By default, Web Visitors shows you companies, not named individuals. Leadfeeder uses the visitor's IP address to match the visit to a company and add business details.

Q: How does the tracking script handle consent?

The Web Visitors tracking script works with or without cookies. If your website uses a Consent Management Platform (CMP), you can configure the script to set its cookie only after a visitor grants consent. See Configuring the Web Visitors Tracking Script with Your Consent Management Platform (CMP) for setup steps. If no cookie is set (for example before consent is granted, or if you choose not to use cookies at all), the tracking script can still identify the visiting company, though it won't recognize a repeat visit from the same browser as the same visitor. How you configure consent and cookie use on your website, and what your applicable laws require, is a decision for your organization to make with your own legal counsel.

Q: Why is the tracking script ‘blocked’ on my site?

The tracking script may be blocked by a 'Content Security Policy' on your site. Learn more about how to get this fixed here.

Q: How do I know the tracking script is on my site and working?

If you have just installed the tracking script on your site give it at least an hour to begin tracking. If you have an unpaid account you will need to wait for 24 hours for the update. At that point, you can check the Tracker status in Settings > Company > Website Tracker. You can also see some tips to check your installation here if you want to see if the script is on the site properly.

The tracking script will temporarily deactivate if the website has not received any visits from an identifiable company for 48 hours. It will re-fire once an identifiable visit lands on the site.

If you have a lower amount of Web Visitors identified companies, it might be that there has been a lower amount of companies visiting and instead more ISP visits.

Also check your Hostname rules in your Leadfeeder settings, so the script records visits from the right domains.

Q: Why do I need the tracking script if I have Google Analytics connected?

As of Feb 4, 2020, at 8 am San Francisco time (Pacific Time) Google Analytics stopped providing information required for visit identification. Any visits seen after that time can not be identified until the Web Visitors tracking script is/was installed and updated.

Q: Is the Web Visitors tracking script GDPR compliant? IP anonymisation

Web Visitors is built to support a privacy-conscious implementation: by default it surfaces company-level intent data rather than named individuals, and it works whether or not cookies are used. Whether your specific implementation is GDPR-compliant depends on your own data processing activities and configuration. That assessment is yours to make, ideally with your legal or privacy team.

You can also turn IP-address anonymisation on in your Web Visitors tracking script settings if desired. IP address anonymisation does not impact company recognition (unlike Google Analytics) nor does it slow down the recognition. However, we won't be able to later debug based on IP addresses anymore, since we won't have them.

IP addresses are anonymised by dropping the last octet. As an example, IP address 212.50.143.138 would become 212.50.143.0. This anonymisation makes it impossible to connect outside IP address information later, preventing singling out an individual visitor.

When you install the tracking script, you (as data controller) and Leadfeeder (as data processor) conclude a Data Processing Agreement (DPA).

Q: What information do I see in Web Visitors once I install the tracking script?

For each visit from an identified company you will see:

  • Time and Date of visit

  • Source and Medium

  • Number of pages visited

  • Pages visited (Title, URL, and Length of the page visits)

  • Visitor ID number

  • The total length of visit

New visits usually appear within 5 to 10 minutes.

Q: Should I also connect Google Analytics with Leadfeeder?

We recommend that you do. Although it isn’t identifying companies it may enhance some information as time goes on such as keyword data and query information.

Q: Does the tracking script work on single-page applications/sites?

Yes, the tracking script works on SPAs. It does not rely on a page-load but it tracks changes in the page URL to identify pageviews. If your SPA changes the page URL without a page-load, the new page URL will be identified as a new pageview by default.

Learn more about SPA tracking here.

Note: This is the default tracking script behaviour after May 2022. If you signed up before and need this feature, please reach out to support and we’ll be happy to help!

Q: Are there any limitations on installing the tracking script on a desktop app instead of a website?

The “webpages” in such an app might be loaded by a different browser view than https or http protocol, which we need to do proper tracking. It may work if it is just a website “packed” into an app with “webpages” loaded only by http or https protocol.

Q: How do I install the Web Visitors tracking script?

  1. In Leadfeeder, go to Settings > Company > Website Tracker, open the Tracker script tab, and copy your tracking script.

  2. Add the script to your website. Pick the guide that matches your setup:

For all installation options, see Installing the Web Visitors tracking script.

Q: Can I install the tracking script on any website?

If you can add custom JavaScript to your site either directly, via Google Tag Manager, or with a plugin, you should be able to install the tracking script. If you can’t add any custom scripts or Google Tag Manager you may want to talk to your web builder or CMS, adding scripts is something you want to do!

Q: Does loading the tracking script twice mean more data?

You should never load the tracking script on your website more than once as it will skew the numbers we will give you regarding your identified companies and visits (you will see more). How can you check if you are loading the script only once? Add this into developer tools/console:

Array.prototype.slice.call(document.scripts).map(s => s.src)

Watch if it shows the tracking script twice:

If you see it loaded twice, you need to fix your code to load it only once.
